i Private Lives by Noel Coward, A study guide prepared by Martin Andrucki, Charles A. Dana Professor of Theater Bates College http://www.thepublictheatre.org/stdygds/private_lives_study_guide_03_04.htm
ii People born between 23 rd May and 21 st June have the Sun is in Gemini, while those born between 24 th July and 23 rd August have the Sun in Leo. Depending in the year in question, the start and end dates of all the Sun signs varies slightly, but there is no such thing as "being born on the cusp so you're a bit of both" - you are either one or the other.
iii 920 out of 1300 relationships have a close trine, conjunction or opposition of the planet Venus to either the Sun, Venus or Mars in their partner's natal or progressed chart
iv See Chapters Fifteen and Sixteen for more on this issue.
v I later found that another astrologer was writing about the same idea at about the same time. Robert Blaschke wrote about synastric progressions in 1997 in Astrology: A Language of Life Volume 1- Progressions, Earthwalk School of Astrology, 1997, p79
vi Interestingly, two squares between the Sun and Venus formed between the progressed and natal horoscopes of Princess Margaret and Peter Townshend between 1950 and 1956.
vii Many of the celebrities dates and times of birth included in this study are also included in Astrodatabank, it is difficult, however, to always match couples whose times of birth are known for certain. In this respect I have had to find a large number of individual dates from other sources, these have included online resources including IMDB.com, findagrave.com, the Encyclopedia Britannica, internet newsgroups and other miscellaneous web pages. The accuracy of dates of birth in IMDB.com is questionable in some cases, but it is very useful as a resource to find out who individual celebrities were married to and when these marriages took place. There is however a point at which IMDB becomes the only resource for relatively obscure individuals dates of birth and so this is possibly the weakest (while also one of the most useful) links in this study. Every date of birth has been checked for dispute or inaccuracy. Those that are under dispute have been rejected.

xxx Placidus de Titus' book Primum Mobile was originally published in 1657 and translated (1994) by Michael Baigent. Garry Phillipson also quotes Henry Coley from a manuscript in the British Library Sloan Ms2280 p.5, in the context of a chart interpretation which begins 'The nativity of Madam Eliz. Hope don by Dr Oznoy anno 1690'. 'and the Ascend to the square of Mercury at the very same time according to (?) this (?) way of Direction us'd by Placidus de Titus a monk, about the year 1655'
xxxi On page 164 of his book, A History of Horoscopic Astrology (AFA). James Holden writes:
"[Kepler] is also said to have considered that the number of days after birth that the Sun took to reach a natal planet was equivalent to the number of years of the native's life that would lapse before the indicated influence would manifest itself. This is the earliest instance I have encountered of the use of what we would call a secondary direction"
xxxii The modern Western use of progressed aspects demands that they have a limited influence in terms of time based on the type of aspect. Traditionalists apply different orbs depending on the planets involved .

cxvii Chapter two of the first tractate of Guido Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae (written in the thirteenth Century CE) is entitled That the Stars Imprint [their influences] on Inferior Bodies and that the Mutations Which Happen in This World Happen by the Motion of the Stars . In this chapter, Bonatti explains that the circular motion of the heavens causes change on Earth and that because the Sun and Moon are closer to the Earth, their presence is felt more than the impressions made by the other planets and stars. Of course, Bonatti firstly ascribed cause to the divinity of God and secondly to the motion of heavenly objects. In essence he is describing physical causality subject to a divine will.

cxxiii The Saturn return takes place between the ages of 29 and 31 years depending on the motion of Saturn. It happens when the planet of responsibility and achievement returns to the position in the chart it occupied when the subject was born. Many people change jobs, relationship or lifestyle at this point in their lives as Saturn holds a proverbial mirror up to their life and asks them whether the direction in which they are travelling is the right one for them.

clxvi Mormon Elder Bruce R.McConkie has this to say:[Astrology is a] form of divination and fortune telling akin to sorcery, astrology is a pseudo science that pretends to divulge the influence of the stars upon human affairs; it is a false science that claims to foretell earthly events by means of the positions and aspects of these heavenly luminaries. It is, of course, one of Satan's substitutes for the true science of astronomy and for the true principle of receiving revelation of future events from divine sources.
Ancient uninspired peoples were frequently deluded by the snares of the astrologers among them (Isa. 47; Dan. 1:20; 2:27; 4:7; 5:7), but it is difficult to understand why people in modern and supposedly enlightened and civilized nations should submit to these same stargazing absurdities. Enlightened people in and out of the Church shun them for the abominations they are. Mormon Doctrine, p.56

clxx Of course, the other side of the coin is that this survey is in itself, incomplete. I have tested only the major astrological aspects. I acknowledge that most scientists would not accept my view as plain fact without considering all the other possible angles between planets.
clxxi The natal Venus natal Mars trine aspect hasn't featured - in isolation - in many of the relationships in this book. See the relationships of Burton and Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, Grace and Rainier, Rainier and Gisele Pascal and Grace and Cary Grant. It is present, although not in isolation, in the relationship of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton.
clxxii The progressed Venus progressed Mars trine was also present in the relationship of Elton John and David Furnish in 1993 when they met. This is not included in the 1300 relationships.
clxxiii The relationships of Carl Sagan with Lynn Margulis, Linda Saltzman and Anne Druyan are not included in the 1300 relationships
clxxiv The relationship of Charles Darwin and Emma Wedgwood is not included in the 1300 relationships. The progressed-Venus natal Mars conjunction occurs 38 times in this survey.
clxxv The relationship of Bart J. Bok and Priscilla Fairfield is not included in the 1300 relationships. For more information about Objections to Astrology see John Anthony West's The Case for Astrology.
clxxvi None of the following relationships are included in the 1300 relationships: Lenin and Krupskaya, Marx and von Westphalen or the Gorbachev's.
clxxvii The relationship of L. Sprague de Camp and Catherine Crook is not included in the 1300 relationships (progressed-Sun conjunction progressed-Venus)
clxxviii The relationships of Bertrand Russell with Ottoline Morrell, Constance Malleson, Dora Black, Edith Finch and Vivienne Eliot are not included in the 1300 relationships. His relationship with Constance Malleson contains a natal Venus progressed-Mars opposition, within one degree in 1915, this aspect does not occur enough times in the survey to be described as a strong indicator, whereas progressed-Venus opposite natal Mars does.
clxxix Bertrand Russell wrote the following in 1932: ' That [astrologers proliferation] should be possible is creditable to them but very discreditable to our educational system. In schools and universities information of all sorts is ladled out, but no one is taught to reason, or to consider what is evidence for what. To any person with even the vaguest idea of the nature of scientific evidence, such beliefs as those of astrologers are of course impossible. But so are most of the beliefs upon which governments are based, such as the peculiar merit of persons living in a certain area, or of persons whose income exceeds a certain sum. It would not do to teach people to reason correctly, since the result would be to undermine these beliefs. If these beliefs were to fade, mankind might escape disaster, but politicians could not. At all costs, therefore, we must be kept stupid.'
