Born Norma Jean Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe never knew who her father was. Her mother, Gladys Baker (nee Monroe ), was confined to a mental institution when Marilyn was nine years old. Norma Jean's childhood was spent in a succession of orphanages and foster homes. She had a number of unwelcome sexual experiences during this time, including being molested at age nine. She spent much of her adult life trying to re-construct the family-life she missed as a child and started early by marrying three weeks after her sixteenth birthday in June 1942. She said that her marriage was one of convenience, instigated by her 'aunt' who wanted to move away from the West Coast and did not want to take Norma Jean with her. Her husband Jim Dougherty was an aircraft factory worker. He said that they would have remained married had Norma Jean not gone off in pursuit of stardom.

Fig 1. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Marilyn Monroe and Jim Dougherty, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1942.Their natal Sun (B3 and E3) and Moon (B4 and E4) positions are in conventionally compatible signs, there is no really close connection between their love and sex centres Venus and Mars either permanently or temporarily with the exception of a wide conjunction between her natal Venus (B6) and his progressing Venus (C6) which was actually travelling backwards (retrograding) in 1942 and would not achieve conjunction until 1969, long after Marilyn's death. Her progressing Venus (D6) is probably close enough to his natal Mars (E7) by conjunction to show a trace effect (sexual compatibility or commonality), though it is too far past conjunction to be seen as the major relationship indicator. The semi-sextile formed by his progressing Mars (C7) to her natal Venus (B6) could be taken to signify his possession of her love, for a short time anyway. 1
Norma Jean was a beautiful young woman. Her husband grew jealous of her many admirers, but it was not until after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour , when Dougherty joined the Merchant Marine, that she was persuaded to pose for a photographer. She appeared in a number of magazines scantily dressed. A short time later she started to have extra-marital affairs with her photographers. She was divorced from Jim Dougherty in September 1946.
Norma Jean started on a downward spiral of nude-modelling, working as a stripper and - allegedly - becoming a prostitute. 2One commentator suggests that clothed she was just another girl, naked she was someone special, but if it's as true as the evidence suggests she will have done it without compunction.
Marilyn Monroe and Fred Karger
1948 was an important year for Marilyn, she met two influential partners. The first was Fred Karger, whom she grew to love. They met when she was sent to him by the studio for singing coaching. Fred was in an unhappy marriage when they started their affair. He divorced his wife, but did not want to marry Marilyn. She had a number of abortions during this relationship. They realised after a time that their feelings were not mutual. Karger was critical of Marilyn and did not regard her as a good candidate for stepmother to his children.
Fig 2. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Marilyn Monroe and Fred Karger, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1948.
Their astrology supports this position. In 1948 there are two square aspects between his Sun and her Venus that brought them together, these are between E3 (his natal Sun) and D6 (her progressing Venus) and D3 (her progressing Sun) and E6 (his natal Venus). Astrologically speaking it is possible to speculate that voice-coaching would happen under such an influence as Venus rules the singing voice and the square aspect is an aspect signifying hard work. As for a loving relationship, there is nothing here in the conventional sense except that their natal Suns and Moons are in mutually harmonious positions in Aquarius and Gemini 3
Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Schenck
According to some commentators4, in February 1948 Marilyn began an affair with one of the founders of Twentieth Century Fox. Joe Schenck, Merle Oberon's former fiancée, was by now 70 years old and found that 22 year old Norma Jean was a turn on. It was lucky break for Marilyn and a shrewd business move on her part when she moved into the pool house at his home. It was pretty much a job for Marilyn and the physical nature of their relationship shows up in their progressed planets for 1948.
Fig 3. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Schenck, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1948Schenck's progressing Venus reaches 5 degrees Aries in 1948 (C6), Marilyn's progressed Mars reaches 5 degrees Aries in 1947, but because Mars moves slower than Venus in this case, they achieve conjunction in 1948. Venus, planet of love and romance is heated up and forced to rush in Aries. Mars, planet of sex and passion is effective in Aries. That's exactly what happened to them both. She helped him to have sex (though it sometimes took ages) and he helped her get on in the film industry (although certainly not overtly). It's worth noting for the sake of context, this conjunction and therefore the exact part of this window of opportunity only ever happened for this couple in 1948

Marilyn Monroe went on to become the biggest female star of the 1950s.
Marilyn was married to two public figures namely Joe DiMaggio, the retired Baseball legend whom she married in January 1954 and Arthur Miller, a scriptwriter whose work is legendary, whom she married in July 1956. Both these men were over ten years her senior and as was the case with most of Monroe 's relationships, have been cast in the role of father-figures for the tragic actress who never knew her biological father. One commentator suggests that Monroe deliberately chose older, 'ugly' or physically weak men in order to remove the emotional entanglements that beset her early relationships. Another commentator suggests she was attracted to Joe DiMaggio because he had a large family and that was something she longed to belong to. She is supposed to have declared on meeting Arthur Miller's parents 'At last I have a mother and father.'
Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio
Monroe and DiMaggio appear to have shared an attraction that was largely physical, although Joe would have liked their relationship to continue longer than it did, Marilyn wanted to work while the traditionalist baseball star wanted her to stay home. He found it difficult to accept that Marilyn was such a big star. On one trip to Japan when Marilyn accompanied Joe who was promoting baseball in the country he discovered just how big a star she was. She was photographed more than he and it was his gig! Despite this they shared a close relationship and Marilyn once said that if it had been based solely on sex, then they would have lasted longer.
Fig 5. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1954.
The most remarkable aspect between the two is his natal Mars (E7) (his masculine-assertive, physical and sexual side, here in sporty Sagittarius) which is in exact opposition to her Sun (B3) (her life-purpose, which in Gemini would like to function on two levels, possibly those of wife
and lover and also at the same time successful actress). There is doubtless a strong physical attraction between the two, but very little in the way of compromise: in 1954 their progressing Venus' were opposite each other (C6 and D6) and Monroe 's Mars (D7) was forming a harmonious trine aspect to DiMaggio's birth-Mars (E7). This aspect meant that they could sweep their differences under the carpet for a short while, but not forever.
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller
Monroe professed an interest in Arthur Miller while still married to Joe DiMaggio. It is said that she fantasised about marrying Albert Einstein and while portraying a dizzy blonde on screen she was an avid collector of information. While not showing an explicit interest in academia per se, she studied acting in some depth.
Arthur Miller, the playwright whose works include the Crucible and Death of a Salesman was attracted to Marilyn's wit and beauty, but was ultimately driven away by the outward manifestation of her inner psychological suffering. Their relationship began to deteriorate beyond hope after the winter of 1959-60. Fred Lawrence Guiles, one of Marilyn Monroe's biographers says that Miller ' tried to analyse what was happening to them, but that the closest he could come to any truth was that he, along with nearly everyone who had come into her life represented a long series of betrayals. She would retaliate by sending him on a demanding series of errands.' 5
At first Miller responded with compliance, in much the same way that Graves had responded to Riding, but there were times later when he 'could not regress his anger.' 6
The major signature of relationship compatibility is their Sun Moon trine (E3 - B4), which is said to be a strong indicator for a successful marriage. At least both have conventional roles, his Sun being in aspect to her Moon. The problem with Marilyn was her wandering eye and eagerness for attention or just to please men.
Fig 6. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1956.They shared a very pronounced progressed Sun (C3) Venus (D6) opposition that crept into orb in the previous two years and stayed in exact opposition for the rest of their relationship. This is the primary indicator of their relationship.

Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand
Some years previously, Marilyn and her room mate Shelley Winters drew up a Most Wanted list which would include those people they most wanted to be notches on their bed posts. Marilyn's intended notches are said to have included Arthur Miller, Albert Einstein and Yves Montand.
Montand and his wife Simone Signoret had starred in Jean-Paul Sartre's adaptation of Miller's play about the Salem witch trials, The Crucible , Miller had admired their performance and also the couple's principles, they had been denied entry to the US prior to 1959 because they refused to anser the question 'Have you ever been a member of the communist party?' on the visa application. They were in New York in late 1959, where Montand had taken his one man show to Broadway and so, when Gregory Peck pulled out of Lets Make Love , one of Marilyn's Fox contract films and a rather stilted musical, it was Miller who recommended Montand for the role of the billionaire who is mistaken for an actor and is hired to act in a satirical play about himself, playing himself, in order to be near he woman of his dreams (Marilyn).
Simone Signoret who won an Oscar for Room at the Top had to return to Europe for costume fittings and although she had deep misgivings about leaving her husband with Monroe , the pair had become friends and Arthur Miller was there to keep her under control. Well, he was until early June, when he announced he was returning east.
Montand was, it appears, shaken by what he perceived was Miller's abdication of his responsibility to look after the increasingly wayward Marilyn. Montand is reported to have said to Doris Vidor, the director's wife and a close friend of the Montand's, 'What am I going to do? He's leaving me with Marilyn. Do you think he doesn't know that she's beginning to throw herself at me?' 7
Montand's concern seems to have emanated from the fact that he believed Marilyn to be unwell. He did not wish to alienate her, yet he was dependant upon her good will. There is little doubt that he also found Marilyn Monroe extremely attractive.
'What else could I do? ' 8 Montand is said to have complained after Marilyn turned up on his doorstep wearing only mink coat.
Guiles writes that it should be remembered that although a few columnists took Montand to task for exploiting her vulnerability, it was Marilyn who was the aggressor, not Montand.
Their affair lasted for a few months in 1960. It was certain that Montand, although attracted at once to Marilyn would never leave Simone.
There is a small window of optimum opportunity in Monroe and Montand's mutual progressed planetary positions for a sexual relationship to take place. This window begins in 1959 and culminates in 1962. This is the period of time when Montand's progressing Mars is coming into a Trine aspect with Marilyn's progressing Venus.

Marilyn Monroe died on August 5th 1962. She was 36 years old.
Fig 9. Graph showing the two degree window of opportunity 1959 onwards created by Monroe and Montand's progressed Venus progressed Mars trine
Shirley Maclaine (who also had a brief affair with Yves Montand), says that Montand maintained his affair with Monroe was an amusing adventure. However, she also makes reference to his later in-depth discussion of the subject in which he stated that he would have married Monroe if his wife Simone Signoret had decided to leave him. He is said to have stated that their relationship had all the hallmarks of a combination that would have lasted. 9
What is interesting to note is that the aspects that were forming when the two got together were extremely suggestive of a close intimate sexual relationship, but both were married at the time. The aspects which created this window of opportunity were not present in 1959 and culminated in 1962.
Yves Montand is supposed to have said "I think a man can have two, maybe three affairs, while he is married. But three is the absolute maximum. After that, you're cheating."
Yves Montand and Simone Signoret

His marriage to Simone Signoret lasted from 1951 to her death in 1985. In 1951 their astrological picture was very different from their synastry in 1960. Simone's progressing Mars (C7) forms a trine aspect to Montand's natal Venus (B6) while his progressing Venus (D6) forms an opposition with her natal Mars (E7). By 1960 this picture has changed. New aspects have formed between Montand's progressed Venus (D6) and Simone's progressed Sun (C3). Her progressing Mars (C7) lies opposite his progressed Sun (D3).
For your information and to press the point - here's Shirley Maclaine and Yves Montand's progressed synastry for the year of their affaire , 1962. A natal Sun (E3) - progressed Venus (D6) opposition and a progressed Mars (D7) - natal Venus (E6) trine reveal yet more evidence of the iterative nature of progressed synastry aspects in conventional intimacy.

Shirley Maclaine had a brief affair with Robert Mitchum. This is recounted in her book My Lucky Stars . The fleeting compatibility influenced by the Sun being opposed by progressing Venus can be witnessed again if we look at their progressed and natal astrology for the year of their relationship: again it happened during the filming of Two for the Seesaw which took place in 1961 - 1962.
In her book My Lucky Stars Shirley Maclaine says:
'It was a case of opposites attracting when he walked into the small office on the Goldwyn lot.' 10
Shirley Maclaine and Robert Mitchum
Fig 13. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Shirley Maclaine and Robert Mitchum, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1961.
Maclaine describes her fascination for Mitchum, and tellingly says this:
'He demanded nothing. He had no desires, not in relation to food, an evening out or even an evening in. His attitude towards lovemaking was the same. He never took the initiative.' 11
Mitchum's progressing Venus (C6) is briefly opposite Maclaine's natal Sun (B3) reflecting what is now a familiar pattern for a brief romance. If Mitchum's progressing Venus in aspect to Maclaine's Sun was the primary indicator for this relationship, then he, being the Venus person would be led by her, the Sun person. The graph below shows the trajectory of this Venus Sun opposition. They collide around 1961 and pass beyond two degrees of separation in late 1963.
Fig 14. Graph showing the window of opportunity provided by Robert Mitchum's progressing Venus in opposition
to Shirley Maclaine's natal Sun 1960 to 1963
Mitchum once said Hollywood was Atlantis, tellingly Maclaine wrote:
'If Hollywood is Atlantis then Robert Mitchum was from Venus.'
Shirley Maclaine's life is interesting in the extreme and as she has a reputation for being both highly intelligent and speaking with absolute candour, it is unfortunate that some people dismiss her metaphysical ideas as nothing more than wishful thinking. Other relationships of Shirley's that show patterns of progressed Venus synastry include the following:
Shirley with Pete Hamill
This relationship is difficult to accurately time, although I believe 1975 to be a correct year. I know they were together in 1976 and also they were living together when Bob Fosse had his first heart attack in 1975 as she makes a remark about this in her book My Lucky Stars . Again we find a progressed Venus Mars opposition in Scorpio Taurus. Exact sometime between 1974 and 1975 12. This relationship is not included in my sample of 1300. Pete Hamill's date of birth is unconfirmed
Fig 15. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Shirley Maclaine and Pete Hamill, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1975.
Shirley with Andrew Peacock
Known to the mysticism-reading and TV-movie-watching public as Gerry Stamford, Australian politician Andrew Peacock was Shirley's karmic love interest in Out on a Limb . Although the start-date of their relationship may have been prior to 1978, a delightful Venus progression which slipped inside two degrees in 1977 is present. Using noon GMT for Andrew's birth data (not brilliantly accurate with Australian births) Shirley's natal Sun in Taurus is just over 3 degrees from an exact trine to Andrew's natal Venus in Capricorn. But if we move the time to midday Australian time Venus moves closer by 22 minutes of arc. This trine could actually be inside 3 degrees if Andrew was born in the early morning in Melbourne , Australia . 13

Shirley with Andrei Konchalovsky
Here close Venus trines, both natally and by progression, create a window that is open widest in 1980. Other aspects, notably involving Mars create an intensely physical relationship. 14

Fred Karger and Jane Wyman 1952
It may be interesting to note that when Fred Karger married Jane Wyman in 1952, their natal and progressed planetary positions looked like this:
Fig 19. Matrix showing the natal planetary positions of Fred Karger and Jane Wyman, together with their progressed planetary positions for the year 1952.Here there is a progressed Venus (D6) - natal Sun (E3) conjunction, also a progressing Venus (C6) natal Sun (B3) trine which is also very common. These aspects are applying in 1952 - reaching a point of perfection and intensity which is often followed either by dissatisfaction, acceptance or contentment.
Fred Karger and Jane Wyman 1954
In 1954 after these two aspects had passed exact, Fred and Jane divorced. Both aspects have come and gone, although in 1954 their effect in terms of emotional feelings will still be strong, whatever it is they promised will have either happened or not. Karger's progressed Sun is also approaching a square aspect with Wyman's natal Venus, this signifies a difficult time when they would conflict on matters of love and money. This period is temporary and would have reached intensity in 1956 and passed by the late 1950's. Coincidentally they remarried again for two years in 1963, divorcing for a second time in 1965. Their best time together astrologically was pre-1954.

Some readers might think that the tangled world of Hollywood relationships reads like a tree of interconnected affairs. As such, and because some of you will know that Jane Wyman was once married to Ronald Reagan, I'll conclude by adding their relationship as well as Reagan's relationship with Nancy.
Reagan and Wyman shared a natal Venus Mars conjunction in 1940...

...while Reagan shared a developing progressed Venus natal Venus trine when he married Nancy. They met in 1951.
