Synastry Pattern Recognition
This page contains examples of some of the different patterns that occur in progressed and natal synastry to assist you in recognising the trines, conjunctions and oppositions of the Sun and Venus, Venus and Mars + Venus and Venus
Natal AspectsSun Venus
Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughan are connected by a natal Sun - natal Venus conjunction in Aries. Vince was born on March 28th and so his Sun is at 7 degrees Aries. It happens that when Jennifer was born, her Venus was near to 9 degrees Aries, even though she is a Sun-Aquarius having been born on February 11th. The Venus position in a natal chart is never more than 48 degrees from the Sun position, but this means that it can be found up to two-zodiac signs away from the natal Sun.
This Sun Venus pattern is fixed because it is between their birth charts. The astrological connection, which suggests a similarity of appreciation, will remain between the couple for life. It is less intense than a progressed aspect between the two planets and holds no guarantees of a long relationship, but neither will its effect fade.Venus Mars

Above: Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Sarah Brightman have two important synastric connections. They met in 1981 while Sarah was still married. She divorced her husband and married Andrew Lloyd -Webber in 1984. The two divorced in 1990. Later Lloyd Webber would rather interestingly given the nature of this piece, write the score to a musical entitled Aspects of Love.
The aspect of love highlighted here is a developing trine between her progressing Sun at 14 degrees 50 minutes Virgo (or thereabouts) and his natal Venus at 16 degrees 08 minutes of Taurus. This is slightly less than 119 degrees.
The signs Virgo, Taurus and Capricorn are each 120 degrees apart. (All the signs can be split into triangular relationships). If we see Venus at 16 degrees Taurus, we can say that any planet between 14 and 18 degrees of Virgo or Capricorn will be within two-degrees of a trine to Venus.
Below: Roger Vadim and Bridget Bardot share two natal Venus progressed Mars trine aspects in 1950.
Above: Brad and Angelina share two progressed aspects to natal planets.
The first is a very positive trine between her progressing Venus and his natal Sun - a very powerful attracting connection. The other is a progression from his Venus to her natal Sun, which is separating when their relationship began.
Sun Venus squares keep couples apart as they apply (or develop). They often symbolise circumstances which cannot be easily overcome (marriage, poverty, imprisonment, distance etc.) Sun Venus trines bring couples together, but as they fade, the couple often feels a sense of frustration or contentment. Such aspects create windows of opportunity for relationships to begin. A singular problem in this relationship is the position of both natal Mars'. Mars symbolises our working methods. It is very difficult for a couple who have Mars in an exact square aspect to, for instance, wash the dishes together, this sort of thing creates minor irritations which need insight and understanding to prevent more serious problems from developing.
Above and Below: Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin married in 1993, but were couple for two years before they married. They separated in 2000.
Progressed - Progressed Aspects
Above and Below: Omar Sharif and Faten Hamama met in 1953 on the set of the Blazing Sun. They married in 1954 (Omar converted from Catholicism to Islam in order to marry Faten who was at the time the biggest female star in Arabic cinema. They separated in 1965 and divorced in 1974. The progress of their relationship matching the progress of their Sun Venus conjunction, which is also present between their natal horoscopes. (see collision graph below).

Below: The other aspect in the Lloyd-Webber Brightman relationship is a progressed Venus progressed Mars conjunction at 22 degrees Gemini.
Sarah Brightman says this of her marriage to Andrew Lloyd Webber:
"it had its time sometimes people have an amazing time together and then it has its end. That's the only way I can describe it... that person is always there and, if you have a good relationship with them, all that's happened is you've both moved into a different place"
